The game was invented in the spring of 1986 by Dmitry Davydov, a student in the Faculty of Psychology at Moscow State University and a native of Kamensk-Uralsky. At first, it was played in the dormitories, classrooms and corridors of Moscow State University, but after some university students spent their holidays at summer student camps attended by students from other Soviet universities, the game began spreading with its new players to other educational institutions across the USSR.
After graduating, Dmitry stayed at Moscow State University to teach psychology to international students (mainly from socialist countries), and some of them, upon returning home, spread the seeds of «Mafia» abroad, initially to Europe (Slovakia, Czechia, Slovenia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Belgium, Great Britain, Norway).
The first documented appearance of «Mafia» in the USA was in 1989, at a summer camp in Pennsylvania.
According to the author, who moved to Boston in 1991, the game is based on the cultural-historical theory of the Soviet psychologist L. S. Vygotsky from the 1920s.
